A wave of talent: Speaking to megatsunami thriller, The Last Bastion’s creator (podcast)

At the end of last month, Isle of Wight production company, Vectis Productions, held open casting and auditions for their post-apocalyptic thriller, The Last Bastion.

The Last Bastion is the first of a trilogy of post-apocalyptic thrillers set in a dystopian world following a megatsunami. The entire film will be shot on the Island, utilising predominantly local talent across 25 different locations.

It all starts in the Canaries
News OnTheWight popped along to have a chat with the film’s writer, Mark C Collins. He explained that the film is based on the real-life prediction of a megatsunami devastating the south coast of the UK.

“It’s going to start in the Canary Islands, Palma, and apparently half the Island is going to fall into the sea, and cause this massive wave.

“It was predicted in the late 1970s and is overdue.”

Saved from the megatsunami
Mark says he has worked out that when the 100-200 foot wave reaches the Isle of Wight, it will hit the south west coast corner and wash around the Island due to its height.

In Mark’s feature film, most Islanders will be saved from the devastation that hits the rest of the UK’s south coast. He said,

“Rosie, a 16-year-old girl, is the main protagonist in the story. She arrives on the Island with her father, who used to bring her here on holiday.

“He’s an ex-commando trainer, and also brings with him some of his guys who set up an army to protect the Island from invaders.”

With the premise of the film being English Rose Joan of Arc meets Mad Max, you’ll be able to picture the formation of different tribes on the Mainland, all wanting to reach the safe haven of the Island.

Keeping it local
Although The Last Bastion was written some time ago, Covid got in the way, but once some investors had been secured, Mark and his colleagues were able to start recruiting actors, extras and crew.

“We’re trying to keep everything local, all the key members are local.”

Get involved
90 people had registered as extras and on the day, there were ten auditions for the key parts, but there’s still time to get involved if you want to be part of the feature film.
