Armed Forces Champion, Ian Dore with D-Day Veteran Roy Hayward

All set for Armed Forces Day celebrations on the Isle of Wight

Traditionally the Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day is not held on the same date as others in the UK, and the outgoing CEO and former chairman of the Isle of Wight council stood by that tradition, setting the date for this year’s event.

Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day will be on Saturday 2nd July in Newport.

Critchison:
Chair of the Isle of Wight council, Cllr Claire Critchison, said,

“Armed Forces Day is a key date in the UK and the Isle of Wight’s calendar, where we really get to show our gratitude for those involved with the Armed Forces.

“This is the day when we on the Island can show our patriotic support for our service personnel, past and present throughout the country; thanking them for keeping us safe.”

What’s planned
There will be a parade that includes amongst other things, service personnel, veterans, standard bearers, cadets and local bands.

It will start at Drill Hall Road, Newport along the High Street to The Quay (Riverside). At the Quay there will be a veteran’s lunch, plus stands including exhibitions, military vehicles, and children entertainments.

Dore: Building from the ground up
Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Ian Dore, said,

“The event was previously organised by a now disbanded committee so it’s a case of building from the ground up. With Covid and some staff departures, that has been tricky.

“What we have in place now is a focused, dedicated working group that have put together an event that is considered a fine starting point.

“Traditionally over the years, the Isle of Wight Armed Forces Days have been superb. This will serve as the foundations on which to take it to new heights, over the coming years. Best boots forward!”
