Traffic cones

An explanation of what’s happening with the three-way lights on Mitchell Avenue

Temporary three-way traffic lights at the junction of Mitchell Avenue, Grove Road and Ocean View Road in Ventnor, whilst safety work is carried out by Island Roads, has led to drivers taking to social media describing the situation as “absolute pandemonium”.

Drivers have complained of poor planning and that the lights are unnecessary.

Undertaking safety work
Island Roads say they have put the three-way lights in place to ensure they can undertake work to install safety bollards. The temporary lights have been in place since Monday (6th) and are due to remain until work finishes on 17th March.

Island Roads have told News OnTheWight that they’ve not “so far seen an unexpected level of disruption”.

Extra traffic from other works
However, emergency Southern Water work in St Boniface Road is directing more traffic towards the Mitchell Avenue area, so Island Roads say they will liaise with Southern Water to help ensure their work is undertaken as quickly as possible.

Site office
A site office (container) has been positioned on the road to provide facilities for workers, which some residents had suggested could be placed somewhere on the industrial estate instead.

However, Island Roads told News OnTheWight that it’s positioning does not affect the traffic lights, which would be necessary even if the container was moved to another location.

IR: Will take any appropriate action to keep traffic moving as freely as possible
A spokesperson for Island Roads told News OnTheWight,

“We apologise for any local inconvenience during this safety work and thank residents for their understanding.

“We will continue to monitor the site and take any appropriate action to keep traffic moving as freely as possible while at the same time keeping our workers and other road users safe.”
