Boulder cliff fall in Lower Gills Cliff Road, Ventnor

Specialist work needed as road faces ongoing risk of rockfalls, say Island Roads

Two lorry loads of debris have been taken away from the site of a boulder rockfall on Lower Gills Cliff Road, Ventnor in just the last week alone.

Residents and visitors to Ventnor have become increasingly frustrated at the road closure, which has been in place since a large boulder was displaced from the rockface and fell onto the road more than a month ago.

News OnTheWight has been chasing Island Roads every week since 23rd February for an update on the situation and some four weeks later have finally been given a response to our questions.

IR: We continue to undertake clearance work
A spokesperson fort Island Roads told News OnTheWight,

“Though we continue to undertake clearance work in Gills Cliff Road, including the removal of vegetation and large boulders, we remain concerned at the risk of further significant rockfalls.

“This week alone, two lorry loads of debris has been taken away from the site.”

IR: Safety of all road users is our absolute priority
They go on to say,

“It is now evident that further specialist work is required both to look at the further removal of unstable materials and/or to look at how any loose material can be prevented from entering the highway. This work will be commissioned as a priority.

“We appreciate that this ongoing issue is causing some local inconvenience but the safety of all road users is our absolute priority.

“We can assure the community that it is our intention to see the road re-opened as soon as it is safe to do so.”
