Barbara Taylor From Enquire on Young Island Open (podcast)

If you’ve been to Quay Arts in the last few weeks, you may have seen the excellent exhibition currently in The West Gallery.

Barbara TaylorWhere Are We Going? was the title of the open competition for young Islanders and as you’ll see from the artwork being exhibited, their quality of the response was fantastic.

At the prize-giving ceremony last month, we caught up with Barbara Taylor from Enquire, who part sponsored the project.

Background on Enquire
Barbara explained the Enquire is a national programme working with 40 galleries across the UK. It’s part of a larger scheme which has been running since 2004, where the Government fund galleries and museums to work with children and young people.

As we’ve previously reported, eight young people known as the ‘Young Curators’ (podcast) worked with Quay Arts on a professional level to organise the entire competition, event and exhibition.

Barbara was mightily impressed with the output of the young people, both those involved with organising the exhibition as well as the 62 who had submitted work into the open competition.

She told us that “when you trust young people and give them responsibility they really do live up to it.”

If you happen to be at Quay Arts over the weekend for the Minghella Film Festival, do take the time to pop up to both The West Gallery and the Learning Curve Gallery, which houses a response to the exhibition by learners from St Catherine’s School.
