On Thursday night hundreds of Beacons were lit around the nation, as well as on the Isle of Wight.
Our thanks to Cllr Karl Love, Isle of Wight councillor and deputy mayor of East Cowes, for sharing these photos from the Beacon light on the esplanade.
He told News OnTheWight,
“It was truly the most beautiful evening, with live music and such a lovely sunset bringing people out into the warm evening air.
“East Cowes Esplanade has always been a place of gatherings for the people with its amazing sunsets looking out across the Solent. It was once the place of customs for dues to be paid before ships sailed onwards with their cargoes to other UK Ports.
“Of course East Cowes was also in the latter years of Queen Victoria’s life the centre for rule of the Empire, today we come in the Commonwealth.
“It was incredibly fitting that our town with its Royal heritage and links played host to lighting of a Beacon one of money across our Island. It was a great delight to see so many people turning out and we look forward to the rest of the events in the town, for the stage being erected on the green, given to the people of East Cowes by Queen Victoria this Sunday from 12 noon to 6pm. There will be like bands and picnics.”
