There have been reports of bogus callers in the Southampton area, claiming to be representatives from the ‘Water Board’.
Although no reports have been made on the Isle of Wight, we thought we’d share the news just in case the rotters decide to make their way across the water.
Southern Water remind us how important it is to check the identity of callers to their homes as three incidents were reported in the Southampton area where a gang claimed to be carrying out work for Southern Water.
They offer this advice for customers
- Attach your door chain before opening the door to strangers.
Water company staff always carry identification. - A company uniform and vehicle logos are points to watch for.
- Remember, if in doubt, keep them out and telephone Southern Water on 0845 278 0845 to confirm their identity.
- Employees of Southern Water will be more that happy to wait while their identity is verified.
Southern Water manager Barry Evans said: “It is sad that there are people who prey on people in this despicable way. Our engineers will always carry identification and if you are unsure of why they are visiting or requiring access to homes, we ask customers to shut the door first and then telephone us to confirm the caller is genuine. Don’t let callers in before you have done this and telephone 0845 278 0845.”
