The Isle of Wight council is proud to be supporting International Women’s Day (IWD) by raising the flag at County Hall in the colours of the suffragettes who did so much for women’s equality.
This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. However, it is also a day which calls for action to accelerate gender equality.
Significant activity takes place across the globe on 8th March with women (and their allies) coming together for celebration of how far women have come in terms of equality and to protest for those rights not yet won.
Embrace Equity
The global campaign theme for IWD 2023 is Embrace Equity which aims to encourage important conversations on why equal opportunities are not enough and why equal isn’t always fair.
The term “equity” refers to fairness and justice and is distinguished from equality: Whereas equality means providing the same to all, equity means recognising that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances.
All female leadership team
On International Women’s Day, the council is proud that the chair of the council, leader of the council, our chief executive, The Lord Lieutenant and the current High Sherriff are all women.
