Cafe Scientifique: Have I Got Snooze For You

Cafe Scientifique returns next week (Monday 16th April) and this month the speaker will be Dr Peter Oliver from the Medical Research Council in Oxford.

Sleeping:He will be speaking about sleep and his talk is entitled “Have I got snooze for you”. This should be an entertaining talk looking at aspects of sleep you may not have thought about.

From the struggle to get up on a Monday morning to coping with jet-lag, the body has to carefully balance our need to be alert or to be at rest.

Why do flamingos sleep on one leg?
But how does the brain control this? How much sleep do we really need? And why do flamingos sleep on one leg? Come along and find out.

Peter Oliver has worked in genetics research for 15 years and is interested in the way the genes and the environment influence sleep, particularly in human disease.

The talk will cover some of the facts and myths surrounding sleep and the role of genetics in the control of circadian rhythms – if you can stay awake, of course!

Cost for entry is £3 per person, takes place in the Regency Room of the Shanklin Conservative Club, Shanklin.
