Greenpeace Isle of Wight has announced that naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham has formally endorsed its petition urging the Isle of Wight Council to phase out the use of chemical pesticides in the Island’s urban spaces.
A high-profile endorsement
Chris Packham works with Pesticide Action Network UK (PAN UK), who campaigns against the heavy use of agricultural and urban chemicals.
Why he’s backing the campaign
Chris considers this a vital step towards protecting local biodiversity and safeguarding public health.
He believes reducing pesticide use is essential for creating “cleaner, greener, and more resilient communities” and calls “the use of glyphosate in urban areas as simply mind-boggling”.
What the petition asks for
The Petition calls for the Isle of Wight Council to articulate a clear, actionable, and transparent plan to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of pesticides like glyphosate in public areas to:
- Reduce risks to pollinators, pets, children, and vulnerable residents
- Protect local biodiversity and public health
- Follow the example of other UK councils already using safer and effective alternatives
Campaign response
Greenpeace Isle of Wight said,
“Chris Packham’s support sends a powerful message to the Isle of Wight Council.
“The Isle of Wight has an opportunity to lead by example and show that protecting the health of residents and nature begins at the local level.”
Next steps
The petition is currently open for signatures and will be submitted to the Council later this year.
