There were unusually low tides on Sunday due to the Moon being so close to the Earth.
Not one to pass up the chance of getting some video footage, Christian Beasley, went over to Compton to capture some remarkable sights – not of the usual Compton-pursuit of surfing, but the near-total lack of water in the Bay. It looks like someone has pulled the plug and all of the sea has drained out.
Watching the video you’ll see the WWI artillery marker at Hanover Point, known as ‘The Thimble’, as well as
shipwreck of SS Carbon, which Christian says has been slowly decaying since it went aground in 1947.
Apparently, it normally lies in four meters of water and the background below was contributed by Allen Tony …
Carbon SS was a British Admiralty Steam Tug of 185 tons built in 1896. She was owned by the admiralty from 1900 and used as a dockyard berthing tug, number C150. Sold in 1947 and was lost when under tow when she then ran aground.
When you see footage like this, it makes you understand why other ships got stuck on sand banks too.
It’s well worth watching …
