A new cohort of Digital Detection Dogs has joined Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary’s Joint Operations Unit to help tackle the evolving challenges of digital crime.
As technology advances, so too do the methods criminals use to exploit it. These highly trained dogs play a crucial role in detecting increasingly sophisticated digital devices, helping officers uncover vital evidence.
Supporting investigations across the region
The newly recruited dogs, Evie, Iggy and Moss, are currently undergoing an intensive eight-week training programme. Once trained, they will be deployed across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Thames Valley, providing essential support to investigations.
They are joined by six-year-old Loki, a seasoned detection dog who is renewing his licence with a new handler. Once their training is complete, they will work alongside experienced dogs Dizzee and Ruby, who have been instrumental in uncovering key evidence in serious cases.
Specialist skills in digital detection
These highly trained dogs can detect a variety of digital and media recording devices, including mobile phones, laptops, USB drives, SIM cards, crypto wallets, hard drives, spy cameras and tracking devices.
Criminals often use these devices to store or transfer illegal content, making it essential for officers to locate them quickly and efficiently. With their powerful sense of smell, these dogs can find items that may be hidden in homes, vehicles or even commercial buildings.
Versatility in the field
Police Dog Instructor Tim Lawrence highlighted the wide range of situations in which these dogs provide crucial support.

He said,
“Our detection dogs offer invaluable assistance to numerous departments across the two forces.
“They’re skilled at working in diverse environments, from residential areas to open landscapes, from vehicles to commercial buildings, and even aircraft.”
Their expertise has already proven essential in cases involving Child Abuse Investigation Units, Priority Crime Teams and Commercial Vehicle Units.
By uncovering digital evidence that might otherwise go undetected, they play a key role in supporting investigations into serious crimes such as child exploitation, fraud and stalking.
A vital tool in modern policing
With criminals constantly adapting their methods, the work of these Digital Detection Dogs ensures law enforcement remains one step ahead.
As digital crime continues to evolve, their unique skills provide a critical asset in uncovering hidden evidence and bringing offenders to justice.
