The Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra’s concert on Saturday 17th May will see the return of french horn virtuoso Ben Goldscheider. Although still in his twenties, Ben’s talent has taken him to concert halls across Europe.
Praised in The Guardian for his ‘extraordinary technique’ and in The Scotsman for his ‘remarkably focused playing’, he has premiered over fifty new works for the horn. However, for this concert he will play a popular piece from the repertoire, Reinhold Gliere’s stylish Horn Concerto in Bb major.
‘Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis’
The Isle of Wight Symphony strings will take a starring role in ‘Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis’ by Vaughan-Williams. His music often seems to reach deep into the past, connecting with the rich English folk music tradition.
Vaughan-Williams’ writing in this work achieves both a blossoming lyricism together with a hushed, meditative stillness.
‘Journey Home’
Also on the programme is Clive Malabar’s ‘Journey Home’. A beautiful hymn for orchestra, this work’s expansive vocal-like melodies take on a free, soaring quality.
Clive was an Isle of Wight composer who sadly passed away in 2022. He was a fine musician and inspirational teacher who left a lasting impression on the musical community of the Island.

The concert will conclude with Dvorak’s Symphony no.9 (‘From the New World’). Composed in 1893, it has taken its place among the finest and most popular of orchestral works. The now famous melodies form part of a stunning creation, in which Dvorak demonstrates his gifts for direct communication and superb orchestration.
Where and when
The concert takes place at Medina Theatre on Saturday 17th May. The evening begins at 7.15pm and the orchestra is delighted to be supporting The Southampton and Isle of Wight Music Trust, Middleton Bursary Scheme at all of its concerts this season.
The scheme provides financial support to young musicians facing challenging circumstances. Sponsorship from Wightlink is invaluable in helping the orchestra maintain the high quality of their concerts from year to year.
Book your tickets from Medina Theatre website.
