Children Creating a feast at Newport Roman Villa

Discover hands-on activities for families at the Museum of Island History and Newport Roman Villa

Families looking for engaging activities this February half-term will find plenty to enjoy at two Isle of Wight museums.

The Museum of Island History and Newport Roman Villa will host special events, offering hands-on experiences and opportunities to explore local history.

Create your own pop-up museum
At the Museum of Island History, visitors can take part in a creative activity, designing their own paper pop-up museum.

Those visiting can choose to feature artefacts from the museum’s collection or showcase their own favourite objects.

A special trail will also guide visitors through some of the museum’s most treasured exhibits, which span from prehistoric times to the modern day.

Half-term visitors will also have one of the last chances to view a temporary exhibition that delves into the rich history of Newport’s people and places.

These activities take place on Tuesday, 18th February and Thursday, 20th February, from 10am until 1pm (last entry).

Hands-on history at Newport Roman Villa
At Newport Roman Villa, families can explore an interactive activity room filled with hands-on experiences.

Children can try making a mosaic, reconstructing a pot, and building a block tower.

There will also be a Roman picture hunt around the villa ruins, along with the chance to dress up as a Roman and explore the replica Roman kitchen.

The entire site will be open, allowing visitors to walk through the historic ruins, museum displays, and garden.

The Family Activity Days at Newport Roman Villa take place on Wednesday, 19th February and Friday, 21st February, from 10am until 2pm (last entry).

Affordable and accessible fun
There is no need to book in advance for these special events.

Entry to each museum, including all activities, costs just £1 per person.

The events are organised by the Isle of Wight Council’s Heritage Service.
