For a long time there has been a period of months during the year when dogs were welcome on Island beaches and others where they weren’t allowed – primarily peak summer periods.
The basis, it’s assumed, is to protect the beaches from a small minority of dog owners don’t clear up after the dog, leaving hazards for unsuspecting beach users.
This year it’s been taken up a notch by the Isle of Wight Council, with those who take their dogs on designated beaches (See map) between 1 May to 30 September being liable for a fine of between £50 and £500.
Potential misunderstanding
One of the issues where there’s a potential for misunderstanding is the new signage that has been appearing by beaches around the Island – also by the IW Council.
We’ve had reports that these new signs state that dogs aren’t allowed on the beach, giving the impression that this is a year round thing, as they miss off the 1 May to 30 September dates, when it’s actually in force.
Ventnor sign removal?
Cllr Susan Scoccia, at Monday’s Ventnor Town Council (VTC) meeting, responded to a more general question about the signage, saying “I can’t express what I thought when I first saw them,” pointing out that VTC hadn’t been consulted.
Cllr Scoccia said that she’d seek to have them removed and the details that they hold placed on the lifeguards hut.
