Thanks to Sue for sharing details of this great project. Ed

The Isle of Wight branch of Re~Cycle are having a collection point for unwanted bicycles at the Riverfest on Saturday 16th May, between 11am and 3pm. Whatever the size, or condition, any bicycles, tools or spare parts will be gratefully received.

While you are at the Re~cycle stall at Riverfest, adults and children can try enter the challenge to ‘Patch a puncture’ and ‘Take off a tyre’ as well as doing tyre rubbings and drawings.

More than 400 bikes donated so far
In the past year Island people have donated more than four hundred bicycles to Re Cycle.

These were then transported in a truck, loaned free of charge by Bartletts, on a donated crossing by Wightlink and driven by a volunteer driver, all the way to the parent organisation in Colchester prior to shipping overseas.

Between January and April this year, over 4,000 bikes have been sent out to projects as far afield as South Africa, Namibia, Ghana and Malawi. There they are distributed to various bicycle projects helping to provide cheap sustainable transport especially important to give access to education, health and jobs.

Other drop-off points
We would love to be able to say we can come and collect your bikes, but unfortunately, that’s just not possible.

Try asking a neighbour, relative, or friend if they can help you get the bicycle to either Riverfest.

If all else fails, contact me, Sue Bailey on 07837 601 315 and I will attempt to link you up with someone who can collect the bike.

As Alexei Sayle says,

“Bicycles offer people a route out of poverty and a means to improve their lives, giving them opportunities to travel to work and school. They are surprisingly adaptable, and can be used to carry goods and passengers – giving small scale farmers and traders the opportunity to reach customers further afield, or take more produce to market. Every bike or bike part shipped to Africa transform lives, communities and generations – and at a surprisingly low cost.”

Help transform someone else’s life while decluttering yours!
