Drop funeral live stream fees, keep call centre staff and develop anti-poverty strategy, says LibDem councillor

Cllr Andrew Garratt, Isle of Wight councillor for Parkhurst and Hunnyhill has submitted his budget amendment ahead of Wednesday’s Full Council meeting when the council’s budget for 2022/23 will be set.

Cllr Garratt’s amendment calls for three ‘savings’ in the Alliance budget to be scrapped.

Instead of a 13 per cent rise in Wightcare charges, he suggests a 3 per cent rise. He also raises concern about the intention to charge a one-off fee for live streaming funerals and plans to reduce call centre staff.

Cllr Garratt says that if the administration wishes to pursue these three indicative ‘savings’ (one of which is a cut), then it should do so through a full process of consultation, scrutiny, and cabinet decision.

Considering those living in poverty
He is also recommending £325,000 is earmarked to commission an Anti-Poverty Strategy and establish a three-year Anti-Poverty Strategy Implementation Fund.
