The Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme has helped inspire hundreds of young Islanders over the years, developing new skills and nurturing a sense of adventure in young people.
On Wednesday 18 March, the council was presented with its operating licence by a representative from the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, south east region.
At the same time the leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Jonathan Bacon and Councillor Shirley Smart, Executive member for economy and tourism, presented a Duke of Edinburgh Award to 24 year old Alex Malcolm who recently achieved the Bronze Award. His award was accepted on his behalf by his father.
Councillor Bacon said:
“I am very pleased the Isle of Wight Council has secured the licence to continue providing the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme on the Island.
“The DofE Awards help young people aged 14 to 24 develop life skills and are a very important scheme.
“I look forward to seeing many more young people achieve their awards over the next few years.”
