Congratulations to Island based public artists, Eccleston George for making it onto the BBC Breathing Places Web site today.
The photo being sported on the BBC Web site was taken at the official open day of Medusa’s Wildlife Meadow (behind Brading Roman Villa) and features the-then High Sheriff for the Isle of Wight, Alan Titchmarsh sitting in one of Eccleston George’s sculptured seats.
The Eccleston George team have been working closely with the Green Gym and The Footprint Trust to develop the space behind the Roman Villa and have done absolute wonders to enhance the area for public use.
The idea behind the Medusa Wildlife Meadow was to develop an existing area of ungrazed meadow downland as a public area for entertainment, education and research.
The meadow features a nature trail which takes a really novel approach. Dotted around the meadow you’ll find a number of sculptured seating areas, which as well as providing a rest for weary legs, gives the visitor a chance to get up close to nature.
Many of the seats were created with the help of local families who customised the seating to their own bodies (look out for the derrière indentations).
The seating incorporates shelter/homes to many species of field voles, shrews, wood mice and slow worms amongst others.
They’re not alone
The meadow also features a living willow seat shelter by Island artist and photographer, Tim Johnson.
You can find examples of Tim’s work scattered around the Island in places such as the Ventnor Botanic Gardens and St George’s School in Newport.
He has a real talent using natural materials, as his work clearly testifies.
Big pat on the back
We reckon that
Eccleston George have done an amazing job (yet again!) on the meadow and look forward to taking a return visit there in the near future.
Do join us in congratulating Eccleston George for making it onto the BBC Web site.
We know that the lads do tons of charity work and do struggle at times to keep afloat, so let’s hope they get lots of juicy commissions from it.
Make sure you go down to Brading Roman Villa to take a look at Medusa’s Garden – it’s a wonderful sight to see.
