Electric Bikes: Great Levellers

When I went along to the Axcess Electric Bike showroom in Lake, I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t a huge choice of loads of electric bikes – though of course logically – that’s what it would be.

Like everyone else, I look on the Internet at stuff, and really you forget how great it is to see, touch and try the real thing! And it turns out that this electric bike showroom on the Island is one of only about a dozen in the whole of the UK.

Knee op meant missing out on cycle rides
Anyway, the point is that me and my partner have both got a bit older, and though we’ve got more time to go out on the bikes together now, it’s getting bloomin’ hard work so we do it less and less, added to which I had a knee op a while ago, and I can’t keep up, so she has to stop and wait for me to get there and then wait some more while I get my breath back, so the whole things got a bit of a chore.

Which is a shame, because in the autumn the damp lanes smell lovely and the air gets fresh and crisp and I think it’s the best time to be out on the bikes, especially as most of the grockles have gone home.

Thought I’d give electric bikes a go
So my plan was to get an electric bike, which would take the pressure off my knee and I could stop and wait for her to catch up in stead.

I tried quite a few electric bikes and settled on a FreeGo “Eagle” with a 17 Amp hour battery which will do well over 45 miles on one charge – even on the Island.

I have to say that it is a thing of great beauty really, being shiny new and even smelling like a new bike. But while I was grinning like a thirteen year old, I could feel my partners’ lack of enthusiasm as she faced a life sentence of puffin and panting to keep up, so we did a deal on one each.

Having two electric bikes has changed our lives
On the face of it, it was a bit extravagant buying two bikes, but you know what? It’s changed our lives. We go out on the bikes five times more often and go much much further.

We don’t care which way we go because the bikes just level out the hills and we go to many new places too far away before.

My knee op gets good exercise without being under pressure, and nicest of all, we can cycle along all the time together as we each choose what level of electrical assistance we want from the bikes so it levels out our different capabilities.

The bikes have given us a whole new lease of life . Yeah – sounds pompous – but its true!
