I was really beginning to resent the cost of getting to work and back every day.

I live in Binstead and work in Wroxall. Yeah – try getting there by bus!!

For some time I’d used my motor bike, but even that’s not cheap to run with insurance and fuel. It’s about 18 miles there and back, so that’s 90 miles a week. Even if you’re doing 30 mpg, that’s still £80 a month just on fuel alone.

Have had my electric bike since June
In June I bought an electric bike from Axcess Electric Bikes in Lake – and do you know what? I love it.

My plan was to use it to go down to Ryde St Johns Station on it, take it on the train to Shanklin, then cycle down the Cycle Path to Travis Perkins in Wroxall where I drive their delivery truck.

After a few days, it was a nice June morning, so I thought forget the train, I’ll go all the way on the bike.

A piece of cake
It was so bloomin’ easy you wouldn’t believe it. Straight through the middle of the Island, out of Binstead on Newnams Road, through Rowlands Lane, across the Downs Road and drop down into Newchurch and – yeah – up Newchurch Schute and on to Wroxall.

I was pretty chuffed with my bike I can tell you.

Hills … what hills?
The guys at work said “Did you have a good trip in?”

“Yeah” I said, “I came all the way on the bike this morning.”

“Blimey! What about the hills?” they said.

“Hills … what hills? Electric bikes just go up the hills” I said!

I’ve been doing it for six months now. Some evenings I come most of the way home just on the hand throttle without pedalling. I reckon I’ve done 2,500 miles and I’ve saved a fortune!

The electric bike costs more or less nothing to run! And guess what my wife and I do at weekends? Yeah – we go out on our electric bikes – she’s got one too now.

So much to offer
I went back into Axcess Electric Bikes yesterday. If you want my advice you want to get down there and try some electric bikes yourself.

They’ve loads of different ones, reduced and second hand ones too, AND if the place you work’s on the Cycle to Work Scheme, you can get them on that.
