Crews from the Isle of Wight fire and ambulance services, along with representatives from Island Roads, took part in a serious incident exercise last night (Wednesday).

Staged in Havenstreet, crews had to deal with a car that had come off the road and hit a train. The event took place between 7-9pm on Rowlands Lane, Havenstreet.

Actors and students played their part
As well as the casualties in the car – the roof of which had to be cut off to rescue those inside – passengers on the train also required care.

Theatrical make-up students from the College played their part too, making-up actors with realistic injuries.

Curry: “An important part in ongoing training”
Dave Curry, Chief Fire Officer at the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, said:

“Multi-agency exercises help us to better understand each other’s areas of expertise and ways of working so that we can improve how we jointly deal with an emergency.

“Although major incidents are thankfully rare on the Island, exercises such as this play an important part in the ongoing training crews undertake to help them prepare for different scenarios.”
