Top tips
Having a barbecue get together, if the weather permits? We’ve got you covered with our top tips for a safe and sustainable bank holiday weekend:
- Avoid accidental fires by drenching ashes with water and let them cool completely for at least 48 hours.
- Never put hot ash or part-burned materials from domestic or garden fires or barbecues/portable barbecues in the bin.
- Barbecues are for outdoor purposes only, you must never light one indoors or in an enclosed space such as a balcony or communal walkway.
- Used disposable barbecues that are buried under beach sand remain at high temperatures for long periods causing horrific burns injuries should anyone step on the area. Always drench with cold water and allow to cool completely before placing in communal bins.
- Never pour petrol or any other accelerants on to a barbecue — it really is an accident waiting to happen.
- Binning hot barbecues puts refuse workers and the general public at risk. It also puts more pressure on emergency services.
