Evey’s story continues to raise awareness for anti-drink drive campaign

Evey Staley

Readers will be aware of the tragic story of Evey Staley, the ten year old girl from the Island who died last year when her family car was hit by a drink driver.

At the begnning of December, the Staley car went on tour of the Island, raising awareness of the dangers of drink and drug driving.

At the weekend, the car left the Island and is now touring the rest of Hampshire.

Those affected by Evey’s death share their stories
Each day last week, police released a video related to the campaign.

Monday saw Evey’s parents, Neal and Penny tell their story. Tuesday gave us Evey’s Aunt and Uncle’s story. The video released on Wednesday heard from the Investigating Officers and on Thursday we saw the story of the Impaired Driver Unit Officer. Friday gave us the story from the Doctor who treated Evey following the accident.

All the videos can be found at the bottom of this article.

Watch these videos to the end
Inspector Andy Storey who is heading this year’s campaign said:

“I’d urge everyone to watch these videos to the end. They are extremely emotive and painful to watch. But that is nothing compared to the pain and suffering the Staley family continue to experience.

“They have shown extraordinary strength in telling their story to us to help us get across this vital message, and to try and stop any other family having to suffer as they have and continue to as a result of drink and drug driving.

“All those involved with the crash were and remain affected by it, as the videos demonstrate.

“Evey is the reason we are wearing purple ribbons this Christmas, to remember her and all those who have died as result of drunk or drugged drivers.

“Drink and drug driving ruins lives. If you know someone who drink drives or takes drugs before getting behind the wheel, I would strongly urge you to get in touch anonymously by text on 80999 or by calling police. Don’t hesitate, just do it. You could save a life.”

Shop a drink driver
Following the success of last year’s campaign, members of the public will once again be urged to “shop a drink driver” by texting the anonymous text service on 80999, and this will be widely publicised throughout the month.
