Ventnor Film Society - montage of films

Experience award-winning films from around the world at Ventnor Film Society’s new season

Ventnor Film Society returns on Tuesday 7th February with a new season of current award-winning films from around the world.

This season, we will be showing our films fortnightly on Tuesday evenings, but also, for the first time, we will be introducing some additional matinee screenings, on Tuesdays at 2.30pm

All are welcome
Everyone is welcome to come along; there is no need to be a member of the Arts Club to come to our films and we are really looking forward to seeing some new faces in the afternoons.

The bar will be open for drinks, teas and coffees and Wendy, the Arts Club manager, will be selling ice-creams to make for a real afternoon treat!

Films from around the world
This season, we have a mix of films from the Italy, Spain, Korea, Japan, Somalia and even Bhutan.

With family drama, romance, thrillers and adventure, we hope to have a programme that everyone will enjoy, shown in the original languages with subtitles.

Our first three films will show in the evening only.

Somalia: The Gravedigger’s Wife
To start us off we have the first Somali language film to be shown in the UK, The Gravedigger’s Wife, a touching yet humorous tale of a young father’s struggle to fund the operation his wife needs.

Italy: Il Buco
Our next film is the Italian Il Buco, a beautiful, almost wordless docu-drama involving a team of cavers exploring Europe’s deepest cave, observed by an elderly local shepherd in the ancient landscape of the Calabrian hinterland.

Japan: Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy
Japanese films are always popular with our audience, so we chose Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. Here we have three unconnected stories of women in love. Each episode explores themes of love, betrayal and twists of fate with emotional narratives and captivating performances.

Bhutan: Lunana – a Yak in the Classroom
We now begin our programme of matinees, on Tuesday 21st March at 2.30pm, with a real gem from Bhutan: Lunana – a Yak in the Classroom. A young teacher is sent to work in a remote mountain village. His classroom has no electricity or blackboard, but as he shares it with Norbu the yak, he comes to change his ideas about what matters in life.

Spain: Alcarras
We travel next to a peach orchard in the sun-soaked village of Alcarras in Catalonia, where a family faces eviction from their land as plans are made to cut down the trees and replace them with solar panels, tearing apart the generations as they struggle to adapt.

Korea: Decision to Leave
Our final choice is from Korea, the mystery thriller, Decision to Leave. A detective investigating the death of a man who fell from a mountain, suspects the man’s widow is involved, but he falls for her charms and becomes entangled in a web of intrigue and deceit.

More information about this season’s programme can be found on Events OnTheWight.
