Ventnor Film Society’s spring programme: From English documentaries to Bollywood drama

Last updated:

Ventnor Film Society returns for our Spring Season on Tuesday 20th February with another selection of recent, acclaimed films from around the world.

This season, we will be showing our films fortnightly on Tuesdays and are pleased to confirm that we shall again be showing all our films at both 2.30pm and 7.30pm. We are also pleased to say that we will again be charging £6 for tickets.

All welcome
We welcome everyone to come along; there is no need to be a member of Ventnor Arts Club to come to our films and we always enjoy seeing new faces.

The bar will be open for drinks, teas and coffees and Wendy, the Arts Club manager, will be selling ice-creams for a little treat in the afternoon.

Films from around the world
This season, we have chosen films set in the UK, Japan, Belgium, France, Finland and Pakistan.

With Bollywood drama, a stroll through English woodlands, a nostalgic Parisian drive, family drama, romantic comedy, and a coming-of-age story, we hope to have a programme that everyone will enjoy, shown in the original languages with subtitles.

The Nettle Dress: Tuesday 20th February 2024
The season opens with an acclaimed English documentary, The Nettle Dress. In this poetic hymn to the healing power of nature, we follow a textile artist spend seven years crafting a length of homespun cloth from nettles foraged in a Cumbrian wood, in memory of his wife.

Close: Tuesday 5th March 2024
Our next film is Close, set in the Belgian countryside, where two 13-year-old boys have grown up to share a close bond. But on the threshold of adolescence, their relationship is put to the test in an emotional portrait of friendship, love, heartbreak and healing.

Joyland: Tuesday 19th March 2024
With Joyland, we meet Haider, living with his traditional Pakistani family. When he takes a job in an erotic theatre as a backing dancer to a transgender performer, he finds himself falling for her. He the truth from his family, but over time, many secrets are revealed. This is a sensitive, funny and moving drama with some fabulous Bollywood style dance numbers.

Fallen Leaves: Tuesday 2nd April 2024
Fallen Leaves is set in Helsinki, where two lonely souls in search of love meet by chance in a karaoke bar. However, their path to happiness is beset by obstacles – from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog. A sweet romantic comedy about people with baggage and the courage to fall in love in later life.

Love Life: Monday 15th April 2024
In the Japanese family drama Love Life, Taeko’s peaceful life with her husband and son is shattered by a family tragedy, which brings her son’s long-lost father back into her life. This is a thought-provoking and emotional film, which explores layers of grief, love and self-discovery.

Driving Madeleine: Tuesday 30th April 2024
Our last selection, in French, is a touching gem of a film. Taxi driver Charles is sent to pick up 92-year-old Madeleine and drive her around her old Parisian haunts as she prepares to move into a care home. As they drive past the evocative landmarks, the pair form an unexpected bond, but Madeleine’s back story includes flashbacks to some harrowing events in her past.
