Experience Luke the Hater’s unique Halloween gig at Strings Bar and Venue

Last updated:

Local artist Luke Curtis, a well-known presence in Ventnor’s music scene, is back with a refreshed approach to his performance and will be joined by his new band, Luke the Hater, at a Halloween gig hosted by the brilliant Ears Peeled at Strings Bar and Venue next week.

Known for his energetic live shows and knack for storytelling, Luke’s music is anything but ordinary. His work often shines a humorous light on life’s quirks, bringing an unmistakable blend of raw honesty and intensity to the stage.

Over the years, Luke has made a name for himself with previous projects, including Fat Earthers. His earlier music career has seen him perform alongside bands like Warmduscher and Keg, and he even hosted WetLeg’s first gig. Now, Luke is ready to push boundaries once more.

A new sound and a larger line-up
In his latest project, Luke brings a dynamic new sound with an expanded line-up, performing with a seven-to-nine-piece band, complete with horns. This ensemble is made up of various friends from his hometown, each contributing to the project’s eclectic vibe. This fresh configuration gives Luke room to explore new styles, while still holding onto his trademark blend of humour and boldness.

Luke’s influences span across decades and genres. While a lifelong fan of 80s and 90s hip hop, he has also drawn from North African musical traditions since childhood. His music mixes styles from artists like Beefheart, The Fall, Billy Childish, Fela Kuti, Talking Heads and MF DOOM, creating a sound that’s both recognisable and wholly unique.

Interactive and unpredictable performances
A live Luke the Hater show is a full experience. Luke often blurs the line between performer and audience, spending as much time in the crowd as on stage. His unpredictable performances sometimes see him howling into a phone receiver or chatting casually with the audience, giving each show a one-of-a-kind, intimate feel.

Luke is joined on stage by a talented crew including Kris Birkin (The Bees) on guitar, Gordon Mitchell on bass, Benji Cooper on keys, Dan Lane on percussion, Kit Jolliffe (As We Leave) on drums, Gracie Boyd on trumpet, Bianca on saxophone and Joe Thompson on trombone.

Halloween night at Strings Bar and Venue
If you liked the sound of all that, you won’t want to miss his upcoming performance on Halloween night at Strings Bar and Venue in Newport. The gig features Luke the Hater, The Optimists and Mouth, with DJs spinning tracks later in the night.

Luke the Hater’s Halloween performance is set for Thursday, 31st October 2024. Don’t miss the chance to experience one of Ventnor’s most captivating storytellers and his new, expanded line-up in action at this Ears Peeled event.

Free entrance to those in fancy dress, otherwise £5. Doors open 7.30pm. 16+

New single and poster artwork from Fat Earthers
Luke’s other band, Fat Earthers, have this week released the new single and music video, A*sehole, as well as an A3 size art print of the second album ‘If You Don’t Like The First One You Won’t Like The Rest’.

The amazing artwork was created by Isle of Wight artist, Mike Forrest, for the album and the three tracks taken from it. Printed on heavy stock matte paper the prints are priced at £10 each.

No doubt there will be merch to buy at Luke the Hater’s gig next week.
