Face 2 Face: Appeal for Befriending Service Volunteers

Thanks to Craig McLoughlin for sharing news of this new befriending service. If you’re able to help, his contact details are at the bottom of the article. Ed

FaceDo you remember the feelings you had when you first discovered your child had a disability, health problem or special need?

Did you need someone to talk to, and was there someone to listen? Might talking to another parent have helped?

Face 2 Face is a new one to one befriending service on the Island developed by parents for parents to help deal with the emotions parents feel when they discover their child has a disability.

Talk to someone who has been there before
Many parents feel confused, angry and saddened when their child is diagnosed. Although some will have access to professionals who can help, many feel the need to talk to someone who they think will truly understand – someone who has been there before – another parent!

If you have a disabled child and are interested in becoming a volunteer befriender to help other parents, please contact Ally on 07435966750 (Mon; Weds; Thurs; ) or email her at [email protected]

What’s involved?
To become a volunteer you must be willing to undertake a comprehensive training course to ensure you are comfortable with and have the necessary skills to become a befriender. Expenses are paid.

During the training and throughout befriending you will be supported by professional staff.

Become a volunteer befriender and enjoy the satisfaction of giving parents of disabled children the support they need.
