As reported yesterday the current floating bridge, sometimes referred to as the Cowes chain ferry, will come to the end of its service on 2nd January 2017.
It’s been helping vehicles and pedestrians cross the mouth of the River Medina between the two towns of Cowes for 40 years and according to the Isle of Wight council – who run the service – in recent years it has helped approximately 1.5 million pedestrians and 400,000 vehicles per year do that.
The floating bridge is being replaced because it’s come to the end of its working life, and in early January it’ll be parked up nearby until a buyer can be found.
Inviting offers
The council are hoping that someone will want to buy the great hulk of steel that has become part of some many people’s daily lives.
They’re inviting tenders and offering an information pack – which has copies of the original construction drawings, machinery details/layouts and a condition survey – for anyone who wishes to make an offer.
We haven’t seen the conditions attached to the sale, but perhaps it could be converted.
If you want to find out more contact Sean Newton (email: [email protected] or phone: 01983 821000), no later than Friday 16 December 2016.
