Food safety concerns raised after food and hygiene inspection

An Isle of Wight Thai restaurant has been slammed due to its ‘unsatisfactory’ hygiene standards.

Thai Mukda on Shanklin High Street was inspected by environmental health officers last month where they found ‘major improvement’ was necessary and gave it a one-star food hygiene rating.

Unsatisfactory standard of hygiene
There was ‘heavy vegetation’ and unused equipment around the waste bins, which inspectors said prevented effective cleaning and pest monitoring.

The general standard of hygiene was unsatisfactory, they found, around the salad preparation worktop unit; food mixer; stainless steel shelving units; cooking ranges; dirty wooden tables;  hand wash basin; all surfaces of the refrigerator next to the cooking range; extraction canopy and switches.

Unhygienic use of boxes
Around the kitchen, polystyrene lids and cardboard were being used to line shelves and worktops, which are unsuitable as they harbour bacteria and cannot be cleaned or disinfected.

Polystyrene boxes were also being used to store prepared ready-to-eat salads, which again was not suitable.

Plastic sheets were fixed to old desks and dining room tables and were being used as work surfaces.

Poor standard of cleaning
Food had got lodged between the sheets and tables, showing they had not been effectively cleaned, the inspector said.

There were items in an unsatisfactory state of disrepair, including shelving under the sink and worktop and exposed work surface chipboard.

The chopping boards in were in a very dirty condition, the inspector said.

Other risks
The inspector also found the painted floor in the kitchen was breaking up and pieces were sticking to their shoes, which meant it hindered effective cleaning.

There was a risk of accidentally contaminating food, the inspector said, as items like flour and nuts were not sealed in clearly labelled, airtight containers.

The restaurant has been contacted for comment.
