Stewart Blackmore, who was Mayor of Ventnor from May 2018 until May 2021, pays tribute to former Clerk of VTC, David Bartlett, who passed away 2nd January 2024. In his own words.
David’s funeral will be held on Friday 23rd February at 1:30pm at the Crematorium. Ed
In the wake of the unfortunate passing of David Bartlett, as reported in OnTheWight, it’s essential to acknowledge his remarkable contributions to Ventnor. His accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by the heartfelt comments and observations shared by readers.
The decision by Chris Welsford, Steve Stubbings, and other council members to persuade David out of retirement during very difficult times and appoint him as the Clerk was a masterstroke, especially considering the challenging period under the previous incumbents.
David’s expertise and leadership were instrumental in shaping the course of subsequent Councillors, a path that could have been starkly different without his guidance.
Strategic acquisition of Salisbury Gardens
I consider myself fortunate to have served as a Councillor and Mayor under David’s clerkship, following in the footsteps of Jason Mack and others. David’s perceptiveness was evident in the strategic acquisition of Salisbury Gardens.
Despite facing significant objections at the time, this decision, guided by David’s advice, stands as one of the best made by VTC and serves as a fitting tribute to David.
Allotments and Ventnor Sheds projects
David’s foresight was also demonstrated in the Allotments and Ventnor Sheds projects, which he drove alongside Jim Toogood and Brian Lucas, with valuable assistance from ex-Councillor David George.
David greatly valued the advice and experience of individuals like Jim, Jason, Brian, and the late Dr Ed Gouge.
Dedicated himself wholeheartedly to Ventnor
Despite the personal tragedy of losing his wife prematurely, David dedicated himself wholeheartedly to Ventnor and the Ventnor Town Council.
His tireless efforts to propel Ventnor forward were evident in his ceaseless work ethic, often extending beyond regular working hours with late-night emails, phone calls, and meetings.
His legacy deserves immense appreciation
In conclusion, David’s legacy as Ventnor Town Clerk is one that deserves immense appreciation and should never be forgotten.
Working with him was indeed a great privilege.
