Isle of Wight councillor calls for an end to sea sewage pollution by 2030

Councillor Michael Lilley, the Liberal Democrat councillor for Ryde Appley and Elmfield, has put forward a motion for next week’s Full Council meeting, with the aim of ensuring that sewage releases into the sea surrounding the Isle of Wight are eradicated by 2030.

The councillor says the “volume of sewage ending up in our waters is unacceptable”. He states that from March 2022 to March 2023 there were 16,787 hours when sewage was discharged into our waters. In October to November 2023 there was a single duration event of raw sewage release lasting 681 hours at Sandown.

He’ll be asking fellow councillors to back his motion next week to “resolve to work with all stakeholders ensuring that sewage releases into the sea surrounding the Isle of Wight are zero by 2030”.

Other efforts
In December, Councillor Lilley wrote to leader of the council calling for a moratorium on coastal development amid flooding and landslides.
