Funding To Help Islanders Get HealthyVoluntary, community and not for profit organisations are invited to bid for grants to help more people achieve a healthy weight and more people to be physically active.

Funding of £20,000 has been made available from the Public Health Department at NHS Isle of Wight, and can be accessed through the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) Prospectus process.

The NHS is looking for organisations that can achieve one or more of the following outcomes:

  • Supporting families with overweight children aged 6-8 in achieving a healthy weight for those children through a range of activities focusing on physical activity and/or healthy eating in accordance with National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance.
  • More families, young people and adults participating in activities that encourage healthy lives and a healthy weight e.g. cooking skills, growing food, physical activities such as sport, dance, walking and cycling. Opportunities to meet together and engage in healthy activities.
  • More babies being breast fed for longer by mothers who feel well supported and are helped to overcome problems that arise.

Competitive bidding
The Prospectus Programme is open to local organisations, service providers and enterprises.

Grants will be awarded through a competitive bidding process that encourages innovation, collaboration and capacity building in local communities.

Particular value will be placed on bids that include volunteering and other activities that enrich lives and strengthen communities.

Open evening
An open evening is being held on Tuesday 2nd November 2010 at Quay Arts from 5.30-7.00pm to give organisations the opportunity to find out more about the application process and what the Island’s NHS is doing to promote healthy weight.

Heather Lovell, Head of Public Health Strategy and Partnerships, said: “At least 60% of adults on the Island are overweight, of which 23% are obese and around a third of children are overweight or obese. By involving community groups and organisations in planning and delivering local services and activities, we can promote stronger and more active communities as well as delivering value for money services. ”
