Your great ideas to improve the Isle of Wight: A final mixed bag

Just before the Christmas break we asked what one thing you’d change about the Island in order to improve it.

Readers were swift to reply and responses poured in over the holiday period. We broke them up into categories and have featured your different ideas each week.

First we featured your transport ideas and last week your ideas on improving tourism and the economy.

Here are some of the other ideas you had to Improve the Isle of Wight

One that we like the most and is something we’ve been saying for a number of years is the idea of a University being created on the Isle of Wight. We reckon it would be a massive boost for the economy.

But there were a wide range of other ideas too …

The renewal of common sense, belief and strengthening of communities and their values. Sharing important values with each other to help the Island grow better in all ways. Greater communication and understanding of needs, targets and achievements.
Mike Vallender

A few Roe deer would enhance the Island’s woodlands.
Tim Brayford

One only? – then it must be EcoIsland.
Steve Goodman

I would have to choose one, it would be number 1, closely followed by number 8.
1. Proper protection of our Heritage sites and buildings and in particular a good outcome for Frank James in 2015
2. Declaring the Island a frack-free zone in 2015
3. Run on Sun Solar Scheme for all Island schools by 2016
4. An Island-run ferry service by 2018
5. A comprehensive cycle network across the Island by 2020
6. Energy self-sufficiency by 2025
7. Food self-sufficiency by 2030
8. Trains/trams/pod cars across the Island by 2030

One thing I would change about the Isle of Wight in order to improve it? Only one thing? The realisation of its true eco island identity – taking us into the 21st century as a centre of eco tourism, renewable energy provision and ethical production. Bringing us forward, not harking back.
Vix Lowthion

No roadside litter!
Stuart Kitching

Return to good old fashioned hedging and ditching works. Not only would we conserve these, already supposedly protected, community assets we would encourage bird life, the tourist industry and road safety we would also save money.
Robert Drover

Improve education and raise aspirations.
Madeline Paterson

O2 3G please
Paul

I just wish the Council had sufficient funding from government and council tax to give Island residents the services they deserve.
Andy Walker
