This good news in from Friends of St Mary’s Hospital in their own words – Ed.
A greenhouse provided by the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital is proving to be a much- appreciated facility for patients staying at a mental health rehabilitation unit.
Woodlands in Wootton
The unit, Woodlands, in Mary Rose Avenue, Wootton, takes up to eleven in-patients at a time, each staying between eight and eleven months. Its role is to prepare them to lead independent lives within the community.
Jane Irwin, team leader, said: “Some of the patients like to get involved in growing plants, especially those plants that can produce food for the kitchen! The greenhouse, which is in a very peaceful spot in the garden, is currently being used to grow runner beans, tomatoes and peppers.
“It’s really lovely for the patients. What is also nice is that the volunteer head gardener here is a former patient.”
The Friends, which provides facilities and equipment to the NHS on the Island, had allocated £3,176 for the greenhouse.
