Hanging Out exhibition by Carinthia West opens at Quay Arts this week

‘Hanging Out’ at Quay Arts showcases rare and unpublished images of icons of 70’s music, film and society captured by photographer and writer Carinthia West, including Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, George Harrison, Neil Young, Anjelica Huston, Helen Mirren, Carly Simon.

Through her early career as an actress and model, Carinthia West became part of the 70’s celebrity scene.

Captured intimate moments with her fellow friends
Ever-armed with her beloved Canon camera, Carinthia captured intimate moments with her fellow friends, resulting in a fascinating personal archive of natural, un-posed images of ‘stars’ at play and rest.

Specially curated by Carinthia for Quay Arts, the show features more than 40 large-format photographs offering unguarded glimpses into the lives of the well snapped.

Muse magazine says,

“(Carinthia West) …a free spirit, blissfully unaware that she was candidly recording icons and iconic moments of the times.”

Strong Island connection
Carinthia has a strong connection to the Isle of Wight, spending much of her childhood growing up here, and attended all three of the original and legendary IOW festivals.

Her parents Mike and Christine West were instrumental in the founding of Quay Arts making this exhibition a special kind of home-coming.

Musician Ronnie Wood says,

“Carinthia took photos while we were getting on with our lives.”

World exhibited
Carinthia’s work has been exhibited at The San Francisco Art Exchange, LA’s KM Fine Arts, Soho Contemporary Gallery, New York City, London’s Library Space, the American Museum and Gardens in Bath, and Dimbola Lodge, Isle of Wight.

West: A glimpse of how we lived then
Carinthia West said,

“The aim of showing my photographs is to give a glimpse of how we lived then. I think of it as an affectionate archive of a more innocent time.

“It is intended to inspire the young photographer to look around at their world and capture that fleeting moment before life moves on as it always does.”
