It’ll be sometime in the next week or so that the judges for the HantsWeb Awards come to their decisions on who the winner will be for each of the twelve categories.
As mentioned previously, VentnorBlog have been shortlisted for the
HantsWeb Awards Best Local Area Website (Sponsored by the Daily Echo), but as we mentioned at the time, there are also quite a few others Island Web sites that have also been shortlisted in the other categories.
In the ‘the Most Accessible Website’ category, you’ll find the Web site for MAS FUSION, a voluntary family orientated community carnival group.
The group was set up in 2005 by two friends, who happened also to be artists with a passion for carnivals.
Through the group, they provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, giving local children, young people and adults the opportunity to celebrate the carnival experience through costumes, dance, music and performance. Their aims are to help people gain self confidence and increase self esteem, as well as bringing out hidden talents.
As part of their inclusion policy, they have tried to make their Web site as accessible as possible to the wider community.
Here’s an example of the measures that they’ve included when creating their Web site.
Using meaningful ALT text for all images to provide descriptive text.
Using descriptive hyperlink text.
Avoiding the use of frames, which are difficult for special browsers to interpret.
Provide navigational short cuts for users of text only browsers and page readers.
Using an easy-to-see web colour scheme.
Using an easy to read font type, size and colour
That the website has 4 additional style sheets, these include two for larger text, a high contrast style in black text on white and a high contrast style with yellow text on black.
They also try to ensure that the navigation is easy-to-read and easy-to-navigate, taking into consideration customers who use speech and text readers.
Users can also alter the size of the text displayed on the site and have ensured that the site works across a number of browsers and operating systems.
We’d like to wish MAS Fusion the best of luck and wish them every success in the future.
