Ventnor fell to their second defeat of the Southern Electric Premier Division campaign after a seven wicket defeat at reigning champions Havant on Sunday.
Batting the first, the Islanders found run scoring hard as the impressive Havant bowlers applied a vice like grip on proceedings. That meant that after 25 overs, the newly promoted visitors had managed only 48 runs with Chris Ridley and Adam Hose struggling to impose themselves. MCC Young Cricketer Hose finally fell for patient 76 and Ridley for 51 but Ventnor were never really able to take advantage of wickets in hand and finished on 185-4 from their 50 overs. Ian Hilsum was run out off the final delivery of the innings for 30 while Jamie Miller contributed an unbeaten 16.
The Havant openers began in positive fashion with Ben Walker (59) and Pete Hopson (40) putting together a century stand. When they departed, Stuart Ransley (38) and Richard Hindley (20) led their side to comfortable win with 10 overs remaining, leaving skipper Hilsum to rally his troops ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Lymington at Newclose at 1pm.
Hatt leads Ventnor to second victory
A strong looking Ventnor second team cantered to an eight wicket win over Wellow & Plaitford in Hampshire League Divison 2 at Steephill on Saturday.
Last year, a youthful team was hampered by a lack of consistency but with Andy and Mark Whyte dropping down from the first team to add experience and quality, this season promises much for Rob Snell’s side.
George Hatt’s return is also a considerable boost and it was the left hander’s fine unbeaten innings of 76 (11 fours and 3 sixes) which led the way for the home team, Henry Bartlett (18) and Hugh Calloway (17) chipping in.
Earlier in the afternoon, an impressive bowling display had dismissed the visitors for 125, former Ryde man Kevin Cooper taking 2-31, Snell 3-22, Andy Whyte 2-22 and Bartlett 2-20.
The side travel to Bramshaw on Saturday.
Brave effort from third team ends in defeat
Ventnor’s third team gave St Helens a fright on the Green on Saturday before slipping to a 17 run defeat in the Harwood’s League division 1.
Jack Lyons and Marcus Toms took early wickets for the visitors before Hadleigh Carkeet (47) and Sam Rockley led the village side to 198 all out inside 32 overs. Promising teenager Lyons finished with 4-26 with Arshad Ashraf taking 2-20.
A fine innings of 85 including nine fours and 2 sixes from Gary Cooper underpinned Ventnor’s reply and at 160-4 a surprise looked on the cards.
The dismissal of Ashraf for 46 triggered a collapse however, Carkeet completing a good afternoon’s work with 4-12 to win the match for St Helens, leaving Mark Price to rue his side’s wayward bowling earlier in the day which gifted the home team 39 runs in wides.
GKN are the visitors to Steephill on Saturday.
Man of the match Horton helps Ventnor to cup win
Ventnor’s under 13 side progressed to the second round of the ECB cup with an emphatic win over Ryde Cavaliers.
Ben Herridge (50), James Attrill (44) and Marcus Horton (47 not out) helped their side to 159-3 before Cavaliers were bowled out for 70, Horton impressing with ball as well as the bat with 4-14.
