We’ve all, of course, heard about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the changes it’s going to bring – it’s been all over the news for months.
Well, this week, a new image generator was released. Called DALL-E 3, it’s I guess unsurprisingly, the third iteration of the OpenAI’s tool.
Being obsessed with the Isle of Wight (which of us aren’t?), the first thing I typed in (they’re called Prompts) was just simply ‘the isle of wight’ and then DALL-E went off to do its magic.
The results were, as is often the case with AI-generated images, incredibly polished at first glance. These also have a slightly dream-like feel about them.
Given that AI is the combination of everything that has been created and made available on the Internet – be that text, photos, images – it’s not surprising that the images that were created contained a lighthouse (or two!), and a swooping coastline.
It’s only when you start to look a little closer, does the strangeness of the images unveil themselves, like the harbour full of boats that is fully enclosed, cut off from the sea.
Or two lighthouses sitting a couple of hundred yards from each other.
Or the lighthouse stuck behind a landmass, so its light can be cast across the wider sea.
Or things on the sea that might be huge white dragonflies. In short, it can get strange.
You too can have a go by using Bing Image Creator – and if you feel inclined, you can share them in the comment below – varying the words you put in the prompt should bring different results. It’d be interesting to see what it produces for you.
