HISTORIC BUILDINGS TRADE SHOW TO BE HELD ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT

The Isle of Wight will host a specialist trade event at Northwood House in Cowes next month.

The Historic Buildings Trade Show, organised by the Isle of Wight Council and supported by The Listed Property Owners Club, will take place on 27 April.

The Island has over 2500 Listed Buildings and 28 conservation areas. The event is designed to encourage specialist craftsmen to the Island, and to raise awareness of the importance of traditional skills which are vital in retaining locally distinctive buildings and tourism. It is understood to be the first show of its kind on the Island for a number of years, providing a welcoming atmosphere in which people can browse products, pick up tips and make contacts.

Owners of listed and non-designated properties are being invited to the show, where experts will be providing displays and encouraging participation in workshops. These will include how to preserve traditional brickwork, and will provide up-to-date advice on planning and building regulations, VAT, and modern-day fire regulations for church buildings. Information and guidance from English Heritage and SPAB will also be available on the day.

The event also links into the EcoIsland vision of the Council. It will provide illustrated talks on energy conservation in historic buildings as well as inviting renewable energy suppliers, such as solar panel manufacturers. The show will be running from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Admission to the event is free of charge

Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member for Economy, Planning and Property, Cllr George Brown said “This will be a very important and unique event for the Island. We have a strong historic tradition and important events such as this will help towards maintaining that tradition.”

If you wish to get involved in the event you can contact the Council’s Conservation & Design Team on 01983 823552 or alternatively email conservation@iow.gov.uk.

Interesting the choice for Newport East is the old Councillor for Chale, Niton & Whitwell, who resigned in 2010 due to work commitments.

Also, why is Roger Dixcey standing for Newport South AND Parkhurst?!

Very unlikely that he will win anyway as Newport East is about the only place on the island which is a traditional labour ward.

I thought that would probably have been the case. Thanks for the confirmation.

And the consequent by-election when he stood down there after just 15 months would have cost the Council taxpayer a few bob.

“Conservative councillors have a strong track record of listening to the concerns of local residents, rolling their sleeves up and getting things done. Many are involved in local initiatives and parish council activity, as well as serving on school governing bodies and other local organisations. The group of Conservative councillors work together as a team to make the right decisions for the Island’s future, and give the… Read more »

Well, my councillor (Conservative) did not reply on either occasion that I wrote to him.

Pardon? ‘Listening to the concerns of local residents’. Someone is having a laugh.Typical Pugh arrogance. This will be the first year I will NOT be voting Conservative. Once again the out of touch Tories in Cowes select candidates with yachtie connections. What happened to grass roots candidates like Cllr Peacey-Wilcox? Perhaps she saw the light. Shame really because she was one of the hardest working Cllrs. I’m… Read more »

I had my local conservative councillor turn up on my door step a couple of days ago. I asked him about the PFI. He said to me the council failed to communicate exactly what it’s about. He said the PFI is not a loan but a gift from Westminster because they’ve seen the state of the roads over here on the Island. He also mentioned that we… Read more »

‘PFI is a Gift from Westminster’
You could not make this up, could you? Its more like a script from Dibley!!
And Tidal Power comments from a standing a councillor makes you wonder if they have been asleep for 8 years or just drifting??

Labour haven’t done themselves any favours, where have they been the last few years? They should have been out there raising their profile and cashing in on the discontent! I’m afraid they will spend a few more years in the wilderness yet. At least we have a few very good Independent candidates. Paul Fuller springs to mind. If people want change they have to vote for it,… Read more »

I’m not a labour supporter but I expect they may pick up a couple of wards like Lake North and Ryde South where they have done quite well in past elections and by elections as well as holding Newport East.

Why did it take so long for David Pugh to show his hand in the 2013 3l3ction?

Note: 50% of the current Cabinet (i.e.)Delegated Decision makers are not standing.

Arthur “trouser leg at half mast” Taylor? Ooooooo!
Also Susan “that’s quite enough of that peasants” Scoccia…… Should be interesting. Next time a Tory appears on your doorstep say you’ll vote for them if they get rid of the boy Pugh

A copy of my local Conservative candidate’s manifesto was popped through my door this week. On the generic side they list the following eight points they are planning to address: – Council Tax Frozen – Reducing Fuel Costs – Housing Priority for those seeking work – Getting Around the Island – Apprenticeships – Attracting Investment & Jobs – Solent Energy Centre – Promoting Tourism Which all sounds… Read more »
