Inmate plot to kidnap Isle of Wight Prison officer discovered: ISIS flag found

A plan to take a prison warder hostage was discovered during a cell search at the Isle of Wight prison.

A ‘homemade ISIS flag’ was also found during the search.

“Detailed handwritten plans about how to escape”
The Mirror quote an unnamed source that “The evidence indicates the plot was very advanced.” The same source says “There were very detailed handwritten plans about how to escape from the jail.”

The BBC report, which has an official quote from the Department of Justice adds that ‘”a very basic description” of the interior of the prison was found’.

The Mirror speaks of an unnamed source’s fears that the inmate “planned to execute a prison officer, possibly by beheading.”

“Acting on intelligence”
The information was disclosed in a security report, distributed weekly, by the National Offender Management Service. The BBC has details that, “Acting on intelligence a prisoner’s cell was searched.”

Sorry I just do not believe this story at all …
This is one I will not be sharing :(

Prison service cuts keep increasing the danger to staff & inmates, and the likelyhood of recidivism; whistleblowers pointing this out are being penalised.

Wonder if the ‘detailed plans’ the authorities say were discovered also included getting off the Island!

There haven’t been a great deal of successes of that in the past.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that. You can never get a booking with Wightlink or Red Funnel when you want one. They would be stuck in a queue. :)

One wonders how the 1100 inmates of HMP IW (mainly sex offenders) would welcome IS introducing Sharia law punishments for their offences.

Well, having worked in hmp, there is only one way to get out, and that is for someone to let you out, even with the officers keys. They don’t get you through any external exit. The hmp I worked at had a home made ‘bomb’ plans found on an inmate on the wing I was working on, using stuff commonly found in prison. This was some years… Read more »

Disagree Superman. Three Cat ‘A’ prisoners escaped in the 1990s via the gym and over the wall. They were recaptured in Cowes. This incident caused HMP Parkhurst to loose its Cat. ‘A’ Status. Happy days:-) I served twenty-five years in the prison service (Only four years at Parkhurst, Thank God). Since my time, the prison service (in line with other parts of society) have gone to the… Read more »

How would You get a hostage over the wall then? Just saying.

Head first is a frightening possibility. (“…fears that the inmate “planned to execute a prison officer, possibly by beheading.”) Young people from this & other countries are committing such acts, and are unlikely to be deterred by a prison sentence if convicted. Just saying.

What kind of bozo writes all his escape plans down and has a flag ? At least in Colditz they made a glider not a flag! Mind you, that didn’t work either. If they are this stupid their days are numbered. “My Plan to Escape 1. Escape to middle of desert/nowhere. 2. Live amongst a gang of crazed psychopaths for a bit, eating hummous without access to… Read more »

I saw a piece on Yahoo yesterday, (haven’t found it this morning), saying a 4th young man from Portsmouth had gone to to join IS in Syria. I don’t know how this compares with elsewhere in the UK, but seemingly Yahoo thought it merited national coverage here.

|In fact the new story you saw was that a 4th man had been killed in Kobane. There were 5. Four are dead & 1 is in prison. Since they wanted to die – and faced with the alternative of having to live under IS in what must be one of the crappiest tracts of wasteland on the planet on nothing but mashed chick peas, this could… Read more »

Thanks Mark, it was frustrating not to properly recall the piece. Does this show that Portsmouth young men are less likely to survive in IS, or that Portsmouth is a particular hot spot for IS support? If the latter, it is a bit of a jolt, being so near.

Actually this little crew of 5 called themselves (amongst other things) the “Al-Brittani Brigade”. Me and the wife & son plus the dog are thinking of calling ourselves a regiment and our pet frog is an amphibious assault team. The Pesh Merga rock! Apparently it means “Those who Face Death”. How cool is that for a name? – Go Kurds! Can we be the Sandown Pesh Merga… Read more »

I can think of some amusing (to me) responses to this, but each time think – that might give IS ideas! Sadly.
Everything seemingly bizarre nowadays seems all too likely to happen …

But it is a comfort we can draw on you and your highly equipped unit, if needs be.

We may have a problem there tryme.
The dog has formed a breakaway splinter group targeting pizza delivery motorcyclists called the Al-Rufus Front.
And the frog won’t come out from under its stone.

Still, fair play to that Kurdish woman who took out an ISIS machine gun position. Who could fail to be reminded of Sandown’s own Eric Twelves Wilson V.C. ?

Thank you for bringing my attention to the remarkable career of Sandown’s Twelves Wilson, the first, oldest and last-surviving recipient of the VC, and that awarded ‘posthumously’ while still alive. I suggest a reading of salient biographical points, (suffering malaria and eye and shoulder injuries while continuing at his machine-gun post, specs smashed), to the renegade elements of your crew, threatening withdrawal of lamp-post and pond-life privileges,… Read more »

Just to clarify …
I mean this story in the Red Top is just a made up Mainstream Media Mass Manipulation Hype …
I’m not saying anything against On The Wight just that I personally will not share links to this, though I usually do post a lot of On The Wight links…

Fair comment. There used to be some guy who sold stories to the newspapers & when he was strapped for cash would make up a story about the IRA plotting to blow up a power station. The IRA never denied it & even if they did it was seen as confirmation.
Nor did they sue for libel.

Or did I just make this up too?

This is quite serious as it has become national news. I hope this is not a way of introducing the “war against terror” to the island.

This type of politics, introduced as a threat, can only mean that the Government wants to organise the campaign to engage us with the developing situation in Iraq and Syria.

was the ‘unnamed source’ a UKIP supporter looking to boost his parties election chance on the Island :)

Seriously the extremist parties tried to sell us that Pan Estate was going to be a mainland ghetto of prisoner families and immigrants..that turned out to be a lie as well

It’s probably so that they can set up yet more CCTV & introduce ‘Island ID’ for our safety& protection. Ferry prices will go through the roof as a deterrant. All legit visitors to the Island will be scanned & chipped when they buy their ferry tickets, DNA taken etc… If they haven’t left the Island when their ticket runs out, they can be tracked down by the… Read more »
