Wightlink-LCM Systems cycle race team take on four events

James Edwards

Thanks to Jack for this latest update from the Wightlink-LCM Systems Cycle Race Team. Ed

On Sunday 18th May, Wightlink-LCM Systems Cycle Race Team riders Sarah Chatwin and James Edwards headed to Surrey for the Porridge Pot Cross Country event. This acted as both round four of the series and the Southern Regional XC Champs.

Weather and terrain conditions were near perfect, and both riders put in a strong showing.
Edwards came eight out of the juvenile males across the two lap race, and was in close contention with the three riders who finished immediately above him. This race provided great experience and training for the young rider.

Second place for Chatwin
In the later veteran women’s race, Chatwin took a great second place staying in touch with the winning rider for the whole three laps, and distancing the rest of a large starting field. A great ride on a technical and testing course.

Hillingdon circuit racing
On Sunday 1st June, Wightlink-LCM Systems CRT had three riders competing in three different disciplines. Ed Sutton lined up in a field of 60 riders for the one hour circuit race at Hillingdon in West London.

Many short lived attacks went off the front to be promptly chased down, and as is very often the case with circuit racing this one looked to be heading for a bunch sprint. 45 minutes in a couple of riders went off the front; Sutton bridged the gap to the break but without a concerted effort it was soon swept up by the peloton.

Waiting for the bunch sprint Sutton jostled for position with five laps to go putting himself within the top ten. The final corner into the finishing straight came, using the slipstream of another rider Sutton sprinted towards the line and took sixth place.

Chichester Olympic Distance Triathlon
Jack Elton-Walters went over to Chichester to compete in the Chichester Olympic Distance Triathlon, which included a 1500 metre swim, 43km cycle and 10km run.

After a disappointing swim, Elton-Walters hit the cycle hard and soon overhauled many of those who had got ahead on the swim. Despite getting held up by traffic along with many other competitors near Goodwood, he got back from the bike leg in a fair time to then go on and set a 10km run PB. This all meant a finishing position of 19th overall (and second out of competitors from the Island).

Merstone 30 Mile Time Trial
Back on the Island, Martin Sanders took part in the Merstone 30 Mile Time Trial. Despite being a gruelling, over-distance event Sanders put in a solid showing to take 3rd overall.

This is yet another strong performance from Sanders this season as he goes from strength to strength.
