Following on from our report of Sunday’s Cycling Criterium in Ventnor, here’s the interview that VentnorBlog did with the race winner, Tobyn Horton, after the presentation of prizes.

Tobyn Horton, Men's Criterium Race Winner, From GuernseySpeaking to the riders, the common phrase that came up was ‘Chess on Bikes’ to describe the tactics of the criterium.

Not only do they need to ride like demons, but have to keep enough composure to be able to plan their rides and when to attack in the attempt to win.

His winning tactics revealed
In the interview with Tobyn Horton, part of Team Guernsey and a Pro rider (He got the individual gold and the team took silver), we asked him a few things including what tactics he used to win the race.

He told VB, “I attacked with a lap and a half to go, at the bottom of the descent (by the old bus garage) everyone sat up and I pulled a sneaky manoeuvre before a corner – and went through the corner quicker – I went through a gap and managed to hold it to the finish.”

Have a listen to the rest of our chat with him … [audio:http://otw-audio.s3.amazonaws.com/tobyn-horton-cycling-crit-winner-island-games-2011.mp3]
