Island MP leads Cross-Party Delegation to see Maritime Minister

The recent cuts in ferry services will be discussed at a meeting next week between campaign groups and a Government Minister

A cross-party delegation will be travelling to London on Tuesday next week to speak to the Minister who is responsible for maritime affairs, Stephen Hammond MP. The group will be raising the impact of the recent cuts in Wightlink services.

They will also be pointing out the extent that the Island relies on the cross-Solent ferry services and the impact that service cuts and fare prices have on Islanders and the Island’s economy as a whole.

The delegation was organised by the Island’s MP Andrew Turner, following a public meeting in January attended by over 100 people. Those who attended called for all interested groups to work together to bring the Island’s plight to the attention of the Government.

Mr Turner said, “I was pleased to organise this opportunity to lobby the Minister on a cross-party basis. In the past we have had some success with that approach and at least it shows that the Island is speaking as one voice. I am not expecting any quick fixes – the market study by the OFT demonstrated that there are none – however Ministers are in listening mode and we can discuss any ideas that we have to improve things.”

  1. Let’s hope the delegation can convince Wightlink of the importance of this lifeline service and take steps to ensure a proper round the clock service. People on the island are already having to take extraordinary measures to keep their mainland jobs, forego social and leisure activities and reschedule or cancel mainland hospital appointments, all because of Wightlink/Macquarie cut backs.
    After the elections, maybe we could push for an all-party agreement to support some of the ‘unprofitable’ sailings? And does the new Solent Users Group have a role in this upcoming meeting and if so, does anyone know what their position is?
