Students, parents and staff from The Island VI Form, Newport had festive fun this week at their Christmas Charity Quiz, raising funds shared between the school and a local community pantry.
Organised by Student Voice, the evening brought everyone together at Christmas time. VI Form teacher Vix Lowthion quizzed everyone on their Christmas knowledge, with challenging rounds on festive music, history, literature and films. 22 teams battled against each other, with the Christmas food round being particularly highly scored.
The Pyle Street Pantry
Staff and volunteers from The Pyle Street Pantry also attended and spoke about their work to distribute food throughout the year.
Rev Mark Evans from Pyle Street Pantry and Newport Congregational Church explained that anyone can join a community pantry – it’s not means tested – and for £5 they can access a choice of fresh, frozen, tinned and dry food to the value of £15-20.
£600+ raised
Over £600 was raised on the night to go towards the pantry and the Year 13 Prom.
The winning team, who took home the inaugural Island VI Form trophy, were the very competitive “No Quizness like Snow Quizness”.
Lowthion: Huge congratulations to the Student Voice team
History and Geology teacher Miss Lowthion said,
“It was such a busy night, with so many teams of students taking part that we had to bring out more tables! Huge congratulations to the Student Voice team for bringing everyone together over mince pies and mulled apple juice. To raise so much money on our first quiz was such a boost.
“Watch this space regarding any future quiz events!”
