Customers at Tesco in Ryde will be invited to donate food in store from Friday 29th November until Sunday 1st December, as the retailer gears up to hold the biggest ever food collection in the UK.

Check the special shopping list
Customers at the Ryde Tesco will be given a special selected shopping list when they enter the store and will be asked to pick up an item of food such as long-life milk, cereal, tinned foods and tea and coffee before donating it at the end of their shop.

The food will then be distributed to the local Isle of Wight foodbank before being
given to people in times of crisis.

Hannah King, Manager of the Island’s foodbank says:

“Winter is the hardest time of year for people living in poverty, and this Christmas is looking especially tough as fuel prices continue to rise. We’re delighted that Tesco are working with us to help stop local people going hungry this Christmas and we hope that many people will support us in helping islanders in times of crisis.”

Nearly 3,000 Islanders helped this year
Numbers of people turning to the Island’s foodbank this year have increased significantly. 2,911 people on the Island have been given three days’ emergency food in the last six months alone.

A representative from Tesco in Ryde said,

“Our customers were incredibly generous when we held our last food collection in the summer, so we’re hoping to collect an even bigger total this time around.

“In the run up to Christmas we want to do our bit to feed those in need and our staff
and volunteers from the foodbank are really looking forward to taking part in the collection.”

Tesco will be topping up total donations by a further 30%.
