Why I love Kirstie’s ‘A Yellow Brick Blog’

Thanks to Kirstie for taking the time to answer the questions. Ed

There are an amazing amount of beauty bloggers in the world, so it’s no surprise that there’s one on the Island that has built up a very strong number of followers.

Kirstie, 23, started seriously blogging to A Yellow Brick Blog in May 2013 and has just crossed the mark of 700 followers in November.

This means she has 700 followers on bloglovin’. Kirstie also has over 83,000 page views on her site. This October, A Yellow Brick Blog reached 500 followers. To celebrate this, Kirstie started a giveaway, which ends on the 30th November.

A Yellow Brick Blog features anything beauty-related, monthly favourites, hauls, hair tips and much more.

The interview
I had the chance to interview Kirstie about her blog and found that her approach to blogging was really interesting.

Q: How long have you been into fashion and beauty?
K: I’d like to say all my life haha! Ever since I was young I loved checking out all the trends that were in fashion (although looking back now some are quite embarrassing!) and make-up has always fascinated me!

Q: How long have you been blogging about it?
K: I’ve had my blog for a couple of years now but have only been full-time blogging on it since May – so six months!

Q: Do you think it closes any doors being a beauty blogger living on the Isle of Wight?
K: Sometimes I think so, I have been invited to numerous events and parties which are normally in London and where I work full-time I can never get there and get home in time! Hopefully one day I’ll have the time to go and enjoy myself though!

Q: How do you manage to balance your everyday life (e.g your job, social life) with your blogging?
K: I schedule a lot! I like to be prepared and take photos in bulk – this makes it so much easier when it comes to the writing! On my days off work I normally try to take photos, edit them and then write anything between one and five posts for the upcoming week or so!

Q: Do you blog as a hobby or are you wanting this to be your everyday job? And if so, then how would you make that happen?
K: Right now blogging is a hobby! I love spending my spare time working on it and speaking to all the other bloggers as well, I learn a lot from them all and everyone is so nice! Obviously the dream would be to do it for a living but I know that there is a lot of competition out there and those things don’t happen for most people, but I just like to take every opportunity that I can to help me learn more!

Q: I have heard that you like the Kardashians. Why did you chose to blog about beauty rather then celebrities?
K: I think beauty can attract such a wide audience, something that interests a 40 year old could also interest a 15 year old – there is always so much to talk about and so many products to try out and test for yourself! It’s a lot of fun!

Q: It’s an amazing achievement to get over 700 followers on bloglovin’, what are your feelings on this?
K: Thank you! I have been overwhelmed to get that many followers in such a short amount of time (six months) it really does motivate me to carry on knowing that people out there are liking what I write!

Q: I love the way you take your photos for your website! What kind of camera do you use and how do you style your photos?
K: Thank you, the photos are something I like to take a lot of time on, I can be a bit of a perfectionist with them! I just use a standard Samsung camera – nothing fancy, I’m looking in to investing in something a little more professional soon though! I like to keep the same sort of theme running through my blog so a lot of the photos are quite similar in the way they are presented!

Q: Every post you have is different, how you think of different subjects to write about?
K: I actually don’t know haha! A lot of things I do are reviews so when I buy something new I will know that I want to do a post about it and sometimes I just think of random ideas which I always write down so I don’t forget!

Q: What tips would you give a teenager wishing to start a beauty blog?
K: I would say – don’t compare yourself to anyone else! Write about what you like and your interests, if it interests you then it will interest someone out there! And do it for fun, don’t put pressure on yourself, have it as fun hobby to do in your spare time….. And it’s great on your CV!
