Isle of Arts: Dr Who celebrated in short story competition

More exciting news from Gilly at Isle of Arts Festival HQ. In her own words. Ed

It’s 50 years since Dr Who first appeared on our TV screens and when children started hiding behind the sofa whenever the Daleks, the Cybermen or, more recently, the Stone Angels appeared.

Of course, 50 years is a mere blink for a Time Lord with a TARDIS at his disposal to move through space and time. But for humans, the past 50 years have been long enough for us to get to know ten regenerations of The Doctor and experience countless adventures with him.

Short story writing competition
As the Isle of Arts team are all fans of the long-running BBC TV show, we thought it would be a great idea to run a short story writing competition for Islanders of all ages with Dr Who as its theme.

We have some great prizes up for grabs, including tickets to The Bestival in the adult category, some of our own festival tickets, and afternoon tea at The Hamborough, Ventnor’s Michelin Star restaurant, and some Dr Who goodies for younger writers.

We will be hosting a prize ceremony during the Isle of Arts festival weekend (19-21 April) and
the winning under 18s entries will be published in the Isle of Wight County Press.

To enter, pick your favourite Dr Who TV show aliens and write your own Dr Who adventure.
And don’t feel you are limited to the current incarnation of The Doctor. The choices are all
yours.

Isle of Arts has teamed up with crime writers Bob and Carol Bridgestock, who write the DI Dylan series under the pen name RC Bridgestock, and the Wight Fair Writers Circle to organise this competition.

How to enter
As in previous competitions run by the Wight Fair Writers Circle, there are three categories: under-12s, under-18s and adult. We have a strict word limit of up to 750 words for under the 18s and 1,500-2,000 words for adults.

Entry is £4 per adult story and £2 per under 18s story, with the proceeds going to two Island- based charities, The Earl Mountbatten Hospice and The Isle of Arts Foundation.

Deadline for entries is 28 March 2013.

Entry forms can be downloaded from www.artsisle.org, you can use the entry coupon to be published in the Isle of Wight County Press.

Entry forms are also available to collect in person from Waterstones, 118 High Street, Newport, PO30 1TP and from the Earl Mountbatten Hospice Shops across the Island.
