Isle of Wight food hygiene ratings: The latest scores on the doors

Environmental health officers from the Isle of Wight Council have carried out assessments of eateries across the Island, with outcomes ranging from the very good to not-so-good.

See if your favourite has been inspected recently in the list below:

Tonino’s Restaurant, Cowes – 5/5 (Very Good)
The Italian restaurant, inspected in early June, has maintained its five-star rating, dating back to 2017. It scored a ‘good’ four-star rating in 2015 but has improved in every inspection since.

The Marine, Ryde – 5/5 (Very Good)
Popular independent pub, The Marine, on Ryde Esplanade was inspected in June coming away with the highest possible rating.

OYO Marina Bar, Sandown – 5/5 (Very Good)
Part of the Marina Bay Hotel on Culver Parade, the bar has topped each of the inspected categories.

The Pointer Inn, Newchurch – 5/5 (Very Good)
The pub’s new owners of the High Street pub had been working hard to get their first rating and received five stars.

Heroes, Newport – 5/5 (Very Good)
The comic book and gaming shop, but also seller of international sweets, snacks and drinks in the Central Market on Scarrot’s Lane, was inspected in June, and received top marks.

Wild Island and Pip and Bean, Newchurch – 5/5 (Very Good)
The manufacturers of natural oils, vinegars and dressings, based at the Langbridge Business Centre, have kept up their five-star ratings.

Comicoffee, East Cowes – 5/5 (Very Good)
The latest branch of the popular independent Island coffee shop has been awarded a five-star rating, after opening earlier this year. With its founding location in Newport, the cafe expanded into the former York Avenue Garage space in East Cowes.

The Taverners, Godshill – 5/5 (Very Good)
The restaurant and pub on Godshill’s High Street had managed to improve its hygiene rating from a three in 2018 to a five in June, with its latest inspection.

Milk It, Sandown – 5/5 (Very Good)
Following a July inspection, the ice cream parlour on the High Street in Sandown got a five-star rating.

Jolliffe’s, Cowes – 5/5 (Very Good)
The Grade II listed cafe on Shooters Hill achieved ‘Good’ across the board to score the highest rating it could.

Pit Stop Cafe, Ventnor – 5/5 (Very Good)
The biker-friendly cafe on the High Street in Ventnor has got five stars in its food hygiene inspection.

T&D Kitchen, Ryde – 5/5 (Very Good)
In its first food hygiene assessment, the burger bar and cafe on Cross Street, has scored top marks,

The Wonky Goat, Ryde – 5/5 (Very Good)
The coffee shop and cafe on Union Street, opened last year and scored high in its July inspection.

T In The Park, Ventnor – 5/5 (Very Good)
Major improvements have been made to the takeaway and sandwich shop in Ventnor Park, reaching the top, after earning a one-star rating in July 2019.

Esplanade Ice Cream Parlour, Ryde – 5/5 (Very Good)
The parlour on Ryde Esplanade was inspected in July, earning the high rating.

Mellish’s, Ryde – 5/5 (Very Good)
The newsagents on Union Street in Ryde has jumped from a two-star, improvement necessary, rating in 2018 to very good following a July inspection.

Dumpling, Dumpling / IOW BBQ Company / Urban Waffle – 5/5 (Very Good)
Taking part in the Miami-styled street food market on Sandown Boulevard at OYO Marina, on Culver Parade, all three establishments were all inspected by the council’s environmental officers over two days in July and found to be ‘Very Good’.

Windmill Campersite, Carisbrooke – 5/5 (Very Good)
The quirky glampsite at Froglands Farm, on Froglands Lane near Carisbrooke Castle has received ‘very good’ across the board in its latest inspection.

Dragon Pearl, Shanklin – 5/5 (Very Good)
Inspected in August, the Chinese restaurant has maintained its five-star rating.

Sails of Cowes – 4/5 (Good)
The popular cafe on Shooters Hill has continued its stream of four-star ‘Good’ ratings, with its previous three assessments, dating back to August 2015, all accumulating to the same rating.

Lake Kebab and Pizza House – 4/5 (Good)
Following a disastrous zero-rating, where urgent improvement was necessary, Lake Kebab House has turned it around in a re-inspection, with its highest rating to date.

  • Management of food safety: Good

The Pilot Boat Inn, Bembridge – 4/5 (Good)
Having undergone refurbishment, the restaurant of the Inn on Station Road has been awarded with a ‘good’ rating following an inspection in June.

  • Management of food safety: Good

Food Warehouse, Newport – 4/5 (Good)
The latest retail addition to the Riverway retail park in Newport, and a part of the Iceland food brand, the Food Warehouse has received its first rating, scoring good. A ‘Generally satisfactory’ hygienic food handling has stopped the store from receiving top marks.

Cardamom Indian Cuisine, Sandown – 4/5 (Good)
Taking over from the former Swad, new owners of Cardamom on Sandown High Street have gained a four-star rating in its first inspection.

The Breeze Restaurant – 3/5 (Generally satisfactory)
Inspected in May, the restaurant at Island Harbour was found to only obtain a three-star rating, with two of three categories falling under ‘generally satisfactory’ conditions.

Central Convenience Stores, Sandown – 3/5 (Generally satisfactory)
The store on Perowne Way has improved from its one-star food hygiene rating in February 2019, where major improvement was necessary to a three-star ‘generally satisfactory’ rating following a June inspection.

Coffee Pot, Ryde – 3/5 (Generally satisfactory)
Improving from its two-star rating in October 2019, where inspectors found improvement necessary the cafe on Union Street, has got a three-star rating, equalling its highest rank in 2017. It had scored a one in May 2016.

  • Management of food safety: Generally satisfactory

Cadet Beach Club, Ryde – 3/5 (Generally satisfactory)
The modern restaurant, overlooking Appley Beach, serving seafood with Asian influences, has scored a three-star rating in its first inspection. The restaurant has taken over the space of the former Three Buoys.

  • Hygienic food handling: Generally satisfactory
  • Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building: Generally satisfactory
  • Management of food safety: Generally satisfactory

Cinnamon, Shanklin – 3/5 (Generally Satisfactory)
The restaurant and takeaway serving Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine, scored a three-star food hygiene rating following its July inspection.

  • Management of food safety: Generally satisfactory

Sandown News – 1/5 (Major Improvement Necessary)
The retailer on Sandown High Street has been unable to improve its one-star ‘Major Improvement Necessary’ rating received back in June. Despite scoring ‘Very Good’ in two categories, the management of food safety is the area causing the problems.

The newsagents also received a one-star inspection in December 2019. It was at a high in February 2016, where it had gained a five-star rating.
