To celebrate World Thinking Day 2013 members of Girlguiding Isle of Wight decided to dance the night away with a Disco. Held at the Event Centre, Cowes Yacht Haven members from across the Island were entertained by local DJ Alan with his across the decades’ selection of music and dance party specials.
Whilst Rainbows enjoyed musical games, the first choice for Brownies were action disco numbers and the Guides and Senior Section members hit the floor with the latest tracks. Leaders and members of Friends of Guiding and the Trefoil Guild joined in with the girls.
Promise renewals
With all Island members across the four sections of Girlguiding together Marion O’Nions (Music Adviser for Girlguiding IW) who had organised the event, asked Janet Lovell (Island Commissioner) to lead a Promise renewal. After Janet had lit a candle eight new members made their Promise and two new Section Commissioners, Karen Hull and Racheal Banting were presented with their badges.
Ventnor Guide Victoria Ford (14) said “it is good to dance and dance with a partner and it is good to meet others from across the Island. We have thought of other Guides around the World and would like to see World Peace.” Most of the units attending contributed to the national World Thinking Day Fund which supports Girlguiding around the World.
Part of a world-wide organisation
Janet Lovell said, “I am so pleased that members from all Sections from across the Island have joined together for this World Thinking Day celebration. It gives the girls the chance to meet up with girls they might otherwise never meet and shows them that they are part of a worldwide organisation.”
10 million Guides worldwide
World Thinking Day takes place every year on 22nd February across the World for members of Girlguiding and Girl Scouts. Altogether there are 10 million members and the organisation is the largest youth organisation in the World.
These 10 million Guides around the World live in 145 countries and on Thinking Day think of each other, of the world they live in, of all that makes them different and all that makes them the same.
It is a day when they come together in thought to celebrate the opportunities that guiding offers them whether they are in a rural community in Africa, in the Australian outback or in the busy streets of Aberdeen. Not only do girls in guiding have a better future because they belong, their communities benefit too.
Birth dates of founders
22nd February was chosen as this special day as both Robert and Olave Baden Powell (Founders of the Scout and Guide Movement) were born on this day. Thinking Day has been celebrated since 1927 and as well as all members thinking of others in other countries a World Thinking Day Fund collects monies for World-wide projects.
Nationally Girlguiding UK chose World Thinking Day to launch its new branding. Although keeping the traditional colours of blue and raspberry that was introduced a few years ago, a new strap line has been introduced which sums up modern Girlguiding- ‘We Discover, We Grow’.
